Analysis of an Ad essays The chosen ad on a denotative level, features a woman, perhaps in her mid-20s to early 30s, holding a sign that is used for police photographs of criminals. Her expression reveals that she is not too happy, and directly beneath her, is a Francesco Biasia Handbag. Behind the person is a black background, and behind the handbag, is a red background. Now on a connotative level, the caption, (Which is She just had to have it), and the juxtaposition of these two images both help to interpret this ad. Because of those two factors, it seems to suggest that this seemingly innocent girl would do ANYTHING to acquire this supposedly great product. This of course includes breaking the law to get it. The background surrounding the woman, would connotatively suggest that she is GUILTY of something because of the fact that it is black. Also, the red background in the bottom image showcasing the handbag, suggests that this object is something of DESIRE. In using these two particular colors, the adve rtisers illustrate even further what they want you to believe, because of that of which these colors are most often associated. For instance, people regularly associate black with guilt, dirty deeds or things that which are considered to be wrong, or illegal, etc. Whereas, red would normally be associated with lust, desire, passion, and that are precisely what the advertisers want you to do, lust for this object. (This woman certainly did, so much so that she risked going to JAIL for it.) This ad is directed towards female consumers, mainly because largely women purchase the product. (Though there have been a few exceptions in the past.) The ad seems to hail not only females, but also a specific age group, (Those probably around the same age of the woman.), and someone who could probably afford the product, even though the person in the ad had to resort to shoplifting. Answers for questions which the researcher may have asked are answered giving this research rigor and validity. However if being very critical, one could mention that this is not a valid time scale and therefore could be a weakness also. The articles aim is to identify to what extent the women in civil engineering and constructions have been incorporated in the management level in the industry. Information for this research was gathered using an ethnographic approach. To do this observation plus detailed field notes were taken. Every successful woman just proves their capability with tremendous effort. To counter such factors, a jointed effort is essential on all levels by all kinds of organizations and institutions. As seen in this article, the current anti-discrimination legislation and equal opportunity initiatives assume that equality will be achieved if organizations treat women the same as men. The approach draws primarily on liberal, sameness notion of equality where sameness is judged against a unitary standard of male characteristics and behavior. This is problematic because it ignores womens relationship to the private sphere. Unless difference is recognized and taken into account women will not be able to compete equally and on their own (rather than on male) terms. Such issues like the benefits of maternity leave, sabbaticals, the phasing in of working hours, working one day a week from home, employees can return to work after the first, second and even third child are a major threat to the management in construction works. Whereas, a good company lets a person to bring their whole self to work, women could find it challenging to embark on such issues. Feeling stretched is not a dereliction of duty and there we will keep working on implementing more policies which benefit women in the work environment. Positive action, equal opportunity policies, prevention of sexual harassment policies, diversity management, mentoring, and the tracking and monitoring of the progress of both men and women were identified as useful ways to level the playing field and improve gender equality in training, recruitment and promotion at organizational level. Conclusion In conclusion, it is the commitment of top management of a firm on which the success of these policies depends. Such commitment can only spring from an awareness that competitive companies cannot afford to lose out on womens talent. An important trend to note and which is providing other avenues for entrepreneurial women is that more women than ever before are becoming employers and running their own businesses worldwide. In a nutshell, this article examined the components of women challenges in management positions in civil engineering in particular and unveiled the way to break out from such notions to the benefit of successful women. Equal opportunities and positive action cannot be confined to individual organizations or business initiatives. Only the active promotion of gender equality in all areas of education and employment by governments and civil society organizations and in particular, by employers organizations and trade unions can finally break the this norm in the constr uction field.

The Buffalo Soldier of the West and the Elimination of the Native American Race When black men first enlisted in the United States army, they were thought to be crazy. These were the men, who just a few years before, were being persecuted because of the color of their skin. Throughout time, the black man has suffered in more ways than we could imagine. The white man stole them from their homeland only for the sole purpose of making money. They were thought to be hard workers and very loyal. However, after the Civil War and the emancipation of slavery, there became some perceptions of the black man that had never been seen or heard before. Even though they were still thought to be inferior, they still gained some respect on the part of the white community. In 1864, the President of the United States, Mr. Abraham Lincoln wrote a statement concerning the black troops enlisted in the U.S army. With the sympathy of the president, this is what was written: The black soldiers in the Civil war had so heroically vindicated their manhood on the battlefield where, in assisting to save the life of the republic, they have demonstrated in blood their right to the ballot†¦." (Cashin and others 1969 p.i) This message was the forthcoming of a new perception of the black man. With the help of President Lincoln, the black man felt that they were on their way to freedom and equality. However, after the assassination of the "Great Emancipator" the black man’s hopes and dreams seemed to fade faster than they were built up. With the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, President Lincoln had given the black man one of America’s highest standards for being considered free. He gave them the right to vote. However, since the assassination, the southern black man could not vote because of the stipulations that the white southerners put on the voting system. Therefore, the black man could only hold on to the last shred of freedom that he was given the right to have. Because of their gallant efforts put forth in the Civil War, the black man was still allowed to serve in the United States army. In 1866 a bill was passed by Congress to allow the formation of an all black regiment. In all there would be several different regiments comprised of only black soldiers. The regiments were formed by the black enlistees and usually the duties were carried out by a white officer.
